Cheesy Contest

Since Something Borrowed, Something Bleu is officially releasing on July 1st (though it's already shipping from Amazon -- yay!) a contest is in order. If you leave a comment on any Hearth Cricket post between now and the end of June, you will be entered to win one of TWO prizes.

The first prize is a copy of Something Borrowed, Something Bleu and an assortment of gourmet cheeses from that go nicely with Champagne: a Chevre, a Cheddar and a Camembert.

The second winner will receive a copy of Something Borrowed, Something Bleu as well as a copy of Making Cheese, Butter & Yogurt, a Storey Country Wisdom Bulletin by cheese maker extraordinaire, Ricki Carroll. The Bulletin provides an introduction to what I think of as "milk craft," terrific for anyone who dabbles in the kitchen like I do or just wants to know some of the basics.

There are lots of really good reasons so many people love cheese. The awesome, often intense, flavors. The textures. The melty goodness. The way it pairs with other foods.

And then there's the PEA.

Phenylethylamine, or PEA, is the love drug. The one that makes us feel giddy and goofy, clouds our judgment and in many ways makes us downright stooopid. Some studies have concluded PEA affects the human brain like cocaine. Brain scans of people in the head-over-heels stage of falling in love resemble those of psychotics. It's strong stuff.

Chocolate contains PEA. That's one of the (many) reasons chocolate makes us happy. But get a load of this: Cheese contains more PEA than chocolate. One study I ran across said ten times more.

Plus, the blue streaks in bleu cheese are penicillin. I have no idea whether it would behoove you to try and fight an infection with a hunk of Gorgonzola, but the fact that a cheese mold has saved the lives of a gazillion people since its discovery is pretty darn cool.

But wait! There's more!

Cheese made from organic raw milk from grass fed cows contains high amounts of CLAs, or conjugated linoleic acids. These are omega 6 fatty acids vital to health. They're potent anticarginogens, may prevent atherosclerosis, ease inflammation, and even adjust metabolism to increase weight loss. And CLA from animal sources is the easiest for human digestion to access.

  8. I can't get past the whole "mold" thing with bleu cheese, but I keep finding recipes with it that look fantastic. I might have to bite the bullet one day and try one.
    My husband's a chocoholic, I think because of the PEA content...wonder what feeding him cheese would do?

  9. Last week I got to stop at a cheese factory store in Wisconsin. I was amazed at the different kinds of bleu cheese. I believe there was even a bleu jack!
